CURRENT FILM OPPORTUNITIES - HUMPBACK WHALES

Humpback Whales. One of the most peaceful and graceful creatures on our planet is the humpback whale. Endangered and previously hunted by the thousands, humpbacks are slowly growing in numbers throughout the world’s oceans. MacGillivray Freeman Films will showcase these amazing animals in their natural habitat in Humpback Whales.

These intelligent whales know where to go. In the winter they migrate to the subtropical waters of the Hawaiian Islands, southern Mexico, Tonga and the West Indies. In the summer they head far north to the chilly waters of Alaska, Iceland and Greenland.

Though humpbacks can weigh as much as 60,000 pounds, their powerful flippers, which can be as long as 15 feet, are capable of throwing their bodies into a somersault as they breach above water. We will feature the intense research being done into the songs of the male humpbacks – highly complex communication tools. We will also study the air bubble net fishing humpbacks have perfected in their efforts to feed.

In an independent study conducted by Market Research Associates in 2000, Humpback Whales was rated extremely highly for topic and title interest among women ages 21 to 49. Sixty-seven percent of those surveyed responded that they were very likely to see a film about humpback whales.

In another recent study conducted by MacGillivray Freeman Films in July 2003 with 632 IMAX theatre audience members waiting in line to see a film, Humpback Whales was again tested as a title and topic and was rated a 7.68 out of a possible 10. Again, audiences reinforced their interest in this as a film they would pay to see.

Remote and rugged locations combined with graceful and acrobatic animals, Humpback Whales is sure to be an audience pleaser. We will develop a storyline that includes the latest science and research about these mammals as well as follow the journeys of those who dedicate their lives to saving the humpback whales.
