TO FLY!

Our first large format film, To Fly!, produced for the National Air and Space Museum in 1976, was one of 25 films chosen by the Librarian of Congress in 1995 to be preserved in the National Film Registry, America’s film archive.  To Fly! joins other films selected to represent the best of the more than 100 years of American filmmaking.  The film was voted “Film of the Decade” by the Information Film Producers of America, was declared a “National Treasure” by the Washington Post, and Variety magazine states that To Fly! is the highest grossing giant screen documentary film of all time.

THE LIVING SEA

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1995 nominated The Living Sea for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject.  The film has also received two “Gold” awards from international film festivals, including a nomination for “Best of Show.” It was released in March 1995 and in June 1997 the 100th theatre signed on to show the film.  The Living Sea became at that time the fastest selling motion picture in the history of large format filmmaking until Everest.

EVEREST

Everest became the fastest grossing large format film ever made and the first to reach Variety’s top ten box office chart when it was released in March 1998.  The unprecedented publicity and popularity of the film brought greater awareness to the film format and hundreds of thousands of new customers.  The astounding marketing campaign designed and produced by our Distribution Company, as well as the extensive day and date release format, set a new precedent for the industry.

DOLPHINS

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2000 nominated Dolphins for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject, the most prestigious honor in the world for a documentary film. The International Documentary Association also nominated the film for its 2000 Award for Distinguished (Short) Documentary Achievement, a first for a large format film. The film was also Winner of the Silver World medal at the New York Festivals 2000 and the winner of the Public Award, La Geode Film Festival, Paris 2000. Dolphins was the fastest grossing large format documentary of 2000.

Testimonials

“The only thing blurry about an MFF film is the line between prose and poetry. They have opened the door to science education for thousands of people by making some of the most beautiful films of this century.”
Meryl Streep, actress
“Our selection of MFF [for ‘The Magic of Flight’] was based upon their proven history of high quality, professional performance.  Their insights were critical to our storyline development.  Our follow-on decision to select MFF as our film distributor was based upon the same rationale.  Other producers stated they could capture spectacular airborne photography; MacGillivray Freeman Films had a history of actually delivering this product.  Greg MacGillivray, in my opinion, is the most experienced and capable large format film producer in the industry.”
John H. Fetterman, Vice Admiral, USN (Ret), President and Chief Executive  Officer, Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Inc.
“MacGillivray Freeman Films is the premier producer of IMAX films for the science education market! That sums it up! Greg has been a major contributor to the field from “To Fly!”, the most seen IMAX film ever, to the present. Greg and his people are excellent from the beginning to end: topic selection, theme development, filming, production and marketing. Working with MacGillivray Freeman Films, because of their processes and dedication, proved to be highly rewarding. I would encourage anyone interested in making an IMAX film to strongly consider working with Greg and MacGillivray Freeman Films.”
Dr. David Ellis, Past Executive Director, Boston Museum of Science
“It’s been a huge pleasure to work with MacGillivray Freeman Films on the production of Coral Reef Adventure. This is a very professional organization with a strong commitment to promoting science and education. I’m especially impressed with their tireless efforts in creating a storyline that is not only entertaining but totally factual as well. It’s easy to understand why MFF are leaders in their field.”
Gerald R. Allen, Ph.D., Science Team Leader, Conservation International
